In August 2009, The University of Pittsburgh and Jack Mascaro (BSCE ’66, MSCE ’80), founder and chairman of Mascaro Construction Company, joined together to build a physical home for the Mascaro Center for Sustainable Innovation (MCSI). The building provides 42,000 square feet of laboratory and administrative space that is integrated with the existing engineering building and serves as the headquarters for MCSI. This LEED-Gold certified building serves as a tangible example of Pitt’s leadership in green construction, as it employs many green practices.
The building is easily accessible from the street and gives a physical presence to the Center on the Pitt campus. A multi-disciplinary group of faculty and researchers supported by the Mascaro Center are collocated in open studio style laboratories and office space. The design embraces collaboration amongst disciplines and the layout helps to facilitate innovation across sectors. The highly flexible space allows research teams to form and reform easily as their needs shift. Convenient team spaces allow students and researchers to gather easily to discuss their work, set directions and collaborate with others from within the building and outside.
The facilities are occupied with 21 faculty / staff offices including a home base for the MCSI and Office of Sustainability leadership teams. It provides student office areas for nearly 100 graduate students and post docs as well as meeting and gathering space through 3 conference rooms located throughout the building space. It provides open student work areas and two kitchens to encourage collaboration and discussion. In addition, it includes ~15,000 square feet of wet lab space with 16 fume hoods.
MCSI has a variety of space types for partners and colleagues to utilize for meetings, hoteling and other needs. The available spaces are listed below.
